ADHD, Learning & Behavioral Concerns in Children, Teens & Adults
Looking past the behavior to understand what's driving it.
Difficulty paying attention, finishing work, following directions, staying organized, or managing behavior can stem from many causes — ADHD is one possibility, but anxiety, learning disabilities, sleep problems, developmental differences, family or school stress, and mood disorders can look remarkably similar. In children and teens, these struggles often surface as declining grades, conflict at home or school, emotional outbursts, defiance, or school avoidance. Dr. Rao evaluates the whole environment a child is developing in — trauma, bullying, family dynamics, friendships, and identity — since children don't always have the words to explain what's wrong. Treatment isn't always medication; sometimes the first step is simply a setting where a child can speak openly. The goal is to understand what the behavior is communicating, not just assign a label.
How do you tell the difference between ADHD and something else causing similar behavior?
Through a thorough evaluation of the child's full history — school performance, home environment, sleep, peer relationships, and emotional wellbeing — not just a symptom checklist.
Will my child automatically be put on medication?
No. Treatment is individualized, and often the most important first step is creating a space where a child feels safe enough to talk about what's really going on.
My child's behavior seems to be the problem — but is it?
Not always. Behavior is often communication. Dr. Rao looks at what may be getting in the child's way, and what needs to change around them as well as within them.
Do you treat adults with ADHD too?
Yes. Dr. Rao evaluates and treats ADHD-related attention, organization, and follow-through difficulties across children, adolescents, and adults.
