About The PracticeAppointments and treatmentChildren adolescents and familiesPractical questions and policies
Are you a psychiatrist or a “psychiatric provider”?
I am a psychiatrist and physician (MD), with residency training in adult psychiatry and additional fellowship training in child and adolescent psychiatry. The word “provider” can refer to many different healthcare professionals, so I use psychiatrist or physician because those terms clearly describe my training and role.
What ages do you see?
I evaluate and treat children, adolescents, and adults. Whether my practice is the right setting depends not only on age, but also on the person’s symptoms, safety needs, location, and the level of care required.
Will I always see Dr. Rao?
Yes. Rao Psychiatry is a solo practice. Evaluations, follow-up visits, psychotherapy, and clinical decisions are handled directly by me rather than passed to another clinician.
Do I need to know my diagnosis before scheduling?
No. Many patients know that something has changed but are unsure why; others have accumulated several diagnoses and want clarity. Determining what may be happening is part of the evaluation.
What if I am not sure we are the right fit?
The initial consultation helps both of us decide whether working together makes sense. If another clinician, specialty, or level of care would better meet your needs, I will be direct about that. Completing an intake does not automatically establish an ongoing treatment relationship.
