What is Spravato?

Spravato (esketamine) is a prescription medication used to treat treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and depression with suicidal ideation without intent in adults. It is a nasal spray that works differently from traditional antidepressants. While standard antidepressants often take weeks to show effects, Spravato can provide relief in as little as a few hours to days.

Spravato is used in conjunction with an oral antidepressant and is typically administered in a certified healthcare setting such as Rao Psychiatry under Dr. Rao's supervision. This is important because patients may experience side effects such as sedation or dissociation after taking the medication.

Before starting Spravato, Dr. Rao will complete a thorough evaluation to determine if it is the right treatment for you. It's essential to discuss any medical history or medications you are currently taking to ensure safe use.

Each Spravato session is 2 hours long.

Patients will need a ride to and from the office.

Most patients will get 2 sessions weekly for 4 weeks and then weekly session for 4 weeks. The length of treatment is individualized and determined over the course of treatment.

Spravato Treatment Overview

When a patient seeks Spravato treatment, Dr Rao will confirm diagnoses and determine appropriateness. This includes reviewing the patient's previous treatment history. Dr. Rao will also conduct a thorough medical history review, discussing any past psychiatric medications, side effects, and overall health. It’s essential to screen for any contraindications that may affect treatment with Spravato, such as a history of substance abuse or cardiovascular issues.

Next, Dr. Rao will ensure the patient understands the treatment by discussing what Spravato is, how it works, and its potential benefits. Inform the patient about possible side effects, including sedation, dissociation, and the potential for abuse. Please note that Spravato will be administered in the office, where the patient will be monitored post-treatment for 2 hours.

In terms of insurance and payment, Dr. Rao will verify coverage for Spravato treatment and discuss any out-of-pocket costs. Dr. Rao's fees for 2 hour monitoring is $200 per session. The patient will be made comfortable in a separate room and is allowed to have family stay with them during treatment sessions.

After starting treatment, the patient will need to  schedule follow-up appointments to monitor their progress, effectiveness, and any side effects.
